Lady Wisdom & Mistress Folly

Proverbs is our current Bible reading book. Note with me the similarities and stark differences of Wisdom and Folly.

Both are referred to as women.
Both traverse the city streets, and perch on the high places to be heard.
Both are vociferous, calling to any who will heed them.
They are both bold, though Folly is stated to be brash, as well.
Both invite guests to their home.
Both Wisdom and Folly offer something but what they offer is where the differences start.

Wisdom has built a house and prepared a banquet. ‘Come eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.’
Folly says ‘Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best!’
Wisdom offers life, Folly offers pleasure.

Wisdom:
All who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.
She offers long life in her right hand, and riches and honor in her left.
She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her.
If you prize her, she will guard you and make you great.
All she says is right and truthful.

Folly:
Brings a man to ruin, even as his heart rages against the Lord.
She encourages wrong: stolen things and keeping secrets.
Folly flatters. Her words are seductive speech and smooth talk.
Little do the people know that the dead are in her house, or that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

I imagine Lady Wisdom as a taller-than-average woman, strong and fit, with clear eyes and a wholesome countenance. She isn’t especially beautiful or gawdy in dress, but you get a sense of “Wow, this is a good and honorable woman.” Her clothing accents her fine form, but is not especially attention-grabbing.

Mistress Folly strikes me as a smaller female – thinner and weak, and wearing a ton of make-up. Beautiful face yes, but it is only a façade. She is constantly moving, her manner is brazen. Her clothing shouts, her hands boldly caress the men passing by. She appeals to the eyes because she does cut a lovely figure, but only a fool will give her a second glance.

Two women. Both calling to passers-by.
One offers life. The other, her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Another fascinating thing about Lady Wisdom:

On the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand at the crossroads…

This indicates that Wisdom is standing at every single crossroad you come to. At every choice, she is there.  Seek her out! Find wisdom, and with all your might, get understanding.

Wisdom exalts a man. Folly brings him low.
